Toran

This quilt is made with two different size triangles.
Finished Block size: 8.5'' X 8.5''
Total number of blocks required: 80
Quilt size: 64'' X 80''
Each block is assembled with rows of contrasting triangles as shown below.

Quilt is assembled with 8 columns each containing 10 blocks.

For large triangles, cut a strip  5 1/2''  X 40'' long.
Cross cut into 5 1/2'' X 5 1/2'' squares. Cut these squares twice diagonally to make large triangles.

For small corner triangles, cut a strip 3'' X 40'' long.
Cross cut this strip into 3'' X 3'' squares.
Cut these squares once diagonally for small triangles.

Arrange the triangles into desired layout for the block as shown above.

Notice that each strip of triangles require 3 large triangles in the middle and two small triangles at each end.

Using 1/4'' seam allowance, stitch triangles as shown below. Finger press at each seam.

I pressed open my seams.

Step 1
Start from the center large triangle and sew a contrasting large triangle to the right.

step 2
Sew another contrasting triangle to the opposite side of the center triangle.

step 3
Sew small triangle matching tot he center triangle on either side matching points at the straight edge of the strip. Initially I had difficulty getting the sharp, straight edges but it got better as I sewed few blocks.

Step 4
Make four strips of triangles for each block.

I am arranging them as I go to keep it interesting and to achieve a surprising end result.

These blocks should measure 9''X9'' to be finished at 8.5'' X 8.5''.
